What is Truth?

When on trial Jesus told Pilate why He came into the world. Why do you think He came? Reasons often given are “to save the world,” “to set the captives free,” “to bind the broken hearted.” While these are all wonderful and valid reasons, what is the reason Jesus Himself gave?

“Pilate therefore said to Him, ‘So You are a king?’ Jesus answered ‘You say correctly that I am a king. For this I have been born, and for this I have come into the world, to bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth hears My voice.‘“ –Jesus Christ as recorded in the book of John 18:37 (NAS)

So, why did Jesus come into the world?

Do you think the truth is important to Jesus???

Jesus precedes over 75 statements with “I tell you the truth…” In the book of John alone He uses the double emphatic “truly, truly…” 25 times.

John 1:17: “…grace and truth were realized through Jesus Christ.”

John 14:6: “…I am the way, the truth, and the life;…”

John 17:17: “Sanctify them in the truth; Thy word is truth.”

John 4:24: “…worship in spirit and truth.

John 8:32:  “and you shall know the truth and the truth shall make you free.”

…and the truth shall make you free.

Free from what???

“There is therefore no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and of death.” (Rom. 8:1 & 2)

…and the truth shall make you free.

If truth sets us free, then what takes us captive?

“See to it that no one takes you captive through philosophy and empty deception, according to the tradition of men, according to the elementary principles of the world, rather than according to Christ.” (Col. 2:8)

“and they may come to their senses and escape from the snare of the devil, having been held captive by him to do his will.” (II Tim. 2:26)

…and the truth shall make you free.

How do we find our freedom from sin and [spiritual] death?

By going to the One who is truth and asking Him for forgiveness of our sin.

“…I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father [Jehovah] but through Me.” (John 14:6)

He is truth! (John 14:3)
